Providing bespoke care nationwide for clients with spinal injuries and neurological conditions
Two day Tracheostomy Course at Northwick Park Hospital attended by Eileen Lynn and Claudine Needham, Trainers at TCC.
We travelled to Northwick Park Hospital to take part in the MDT Tracheostomy study days, the first day covering the fundamentals of Tracheostomy care, and the second day Advanced Skills for Tracheostomy care. The course directors were Mr Taran Tatla ENT Consultant, and Claire Fitzgerald Lead Respiratory Physiotherapist.
After a warm welcome we were guided through the history, anatomy and physiology, indications and types of tracheostomy, laryngectomy and emergency situations. The days were thorough and informative, with speakers from nursing roles, physiotherapy, Speech and Language therapy, and ENT Consultants.
There was practical guidance through types of tubes and equipment for essential and routine care, and demonstration workshops covering communication aids, managing problems, tube changes, suctioning and stoma care.
During the breaks we had the opportunity to meet other delegates and speak with the medical device companies, whilst enjoying the excellent lunch provided.
This course gave a very good overview of the subject, and we both came away with more information and understanding around the Tracheostomy, which will be put to good use in our roles.
