Geekfest is an annual celebration of science fiction/fantasy films, TV and comics. The idea started in America in the sixties. Now it’s big business. The major film studios use these events to promote their latest ‘genre’ offerings. Comicon is the most famous. Actors, technicians, authors etc. attend to sign books and photos and to give talks.
Cornwall’s version is much more modest, but we had a writer, a Hollywood film actor and a replica DeLorean car from Back to the Future! It’s also a chance for young and old to dress up as their favourite characters. Last year a small boy appeared as ‘Henry the Hoover’! Dressing up is now called ‘Cosplay’ and is incredibly popular in Japan.
There are competitions to see who has the most impressive costume. I went as Professor Challenger from Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Lost World’. I think this was a bit too niche amongst the Imperial Stormtroopers and Alien characters.
It was a great day out for me and Julie, my Support Worker. Next year I might be more ambitious. Professor Xavier from the X-Men and Davros the inventor of the Daleks are obvious characters for me to portray. Watch this space!
